How to Make a Venn Diagram in Google Docs
Google Docs doesn't have a native Venn diagram tool. Here's how to create one with venndiagrammer and insert it into your document in under a minute.
The Problem with Venn Diagrams in Google Docs
Google Docs has basic drawing tools, but making a proper Venn diagram with them is tedious. You'd need to manually draw two overlapping circles, position text boxes in each region, and fight with alignment. Google Drawings is slightly better but still clunky for this specific task.
A faster approach: use a free, dedicated tool to create the diagram, export it as an image, and insert it into your doc. That's exactly what venndiagrammer is built for.
Step-by-Step Guide
Open the Editor
Open the free venndiagrammer editor in any browser. Works on Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. No extensions or plugins needed.
Open the EditorName Your Sets
Click on Set A and Set B above the circles. Replace them with the two categories you're comparing. For a school essay, this might be "Cats" and "Dogs". For a business document, maybe "Q1 Goals" and "Q2 Goals".
Fill in Each Region
Click inside any part of the diagram and start typing:
- Left crescent — traits unique to the first set
- Overlap — traits shared by both
- Right crescent — traits unique to the second set
Press Enter after each item to add another. The diagram grows automatically as you add content.
Customize the Shape (Optional)
Drag the Shape slider to adjust the diagram from perfect circles to wider ellipses. Ellipses work especially well in documents because they're wider than they are tall, fitting naturally into the text flow.
Tip: For Google Docs, the ellipse shape (slider to the right) often looks better because documents are read left-to-right and wider diagrams use the page width more effectively.
Export as PNG
Click PNG in the export bar at the bottom. A high-resolution image downloads to your computer instantly.
Insert into Google Docs
In your Google Doc:
- Place your cursor where you want the diagram
- Go to Insert > Image > Upload from computer
- Select venn-diagram.png from your Downloads folder
- The image appears in your document—click it to resize or reposition
Formatting Tips for Google Docs
- Set text wrapping. Click the image, then choose "Wrap text" or "Break text" from the image options to control how text flows around the diagram.
- Center it. For a full-width diagram, select the image and use Center alignment from the toolbar.
- Add a caption. Add a line of smaller, italic text below the image like "Figure 1: Comparison of X and Y" for academic documents.
- Keep items concise. In documents, readers scan diagrams quickly. Short phrases work best.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use this for Google Slides too?
Absolutely. The same PNG works in Google Slides via Insert > Image > Upload from computer. You can also check our PowerPoint guide for presentation-specific tips.
Will the image look blurry?
No. venndiagrammer exports at 2x resolution by default, so the image stays sharp even when scaled up in your document.
Can I make changes after inserting?
The PNG is a static image. To edit, return to the venndiagrammer editor, make your changes, re-export, and replace the image in your doc (right-click the image > Replace image).
Is it free?
Yes, completely free. No account, no watermark, no usage limits.
